Attending Music Festivals with an Ostomy: Experiences?

Attending a music festival with an ostomy can seem daunting, but it doesn't have to stop you from enjoying the experience. Here's a story of someone who faced this challenge and came out with a positive experience, along with some helpful advice for anyone in a similar situation.

The person had an ileostomy and was invited to a 12-hour outdoor music festival. They were worried about:

- Getting to the toilets quickly through crowds if an urgent need arose.
- The cleanliness of portable toilets used by thousands.
- Spending the day feeling anxious instead of enjoying the music.

Despite these concerns, they decided to attend the festival and found it to be a very positive experience. Here are some insights and tips they shared:

1. **General Attitude**: Having an ostomy doesn't have to limit your activities. With some planning and common sense, you can enjoy the event.

2. **Pre-planning Tips**:
- Arrive early and locate all the toilet areas right away.
- Position yourself in a spot that allows easier access to toilets, rather than being right at the stage.

3. **Supplies to Bring**:
- Bring double the usual pouching supplies, spare clothes, black bin bags, tissues or toilet paper, and hand-cleaning items.
- Consider using a small bag or the venue's coat-check to carry your items, especially for indoor shows.

4. **Cleanliness and Disabled Facilities**:
- Look for disabled toilets, as many festivals provide a dedicated accessible portaloo that is often cleaner and monitored by security.
- In the UK, a RADAR key can open over 7,000 locked disabled toilets, so carry one if applicable.
- If staff resist access, explain your medical need firmly.

5. **Food and Drink Management**:
- Be mindful of what you eat and drink before and during the event to help control output.
- Moderate alcohol intake if you're unsure how it affects your stoma.

6. **Emptying Technique**:
- Standing to empty your bag can be easier and cleaner in portable toilets.

7. **Psychological Encouragement**:
- Many people have successfully attended events like Massive Attack at Westonbirt Arboretum, Creamfields, and other festivals after their surgery.
- Some find festivals easier post-ostomy because they no longer have to rush to the toilets.
- Remember, the surgery was meant to help you live fully—don't let the bag stop you from enjoying life.
