Need help applying Sure Seal rings - struggling with removing backing

This topic is about using Sure Seal Rings, which are designed to provide extra security and protection for ostomy appliances. The person who started the discussion is having trouble with applying these rings, particularly with removing the paper backing and ensuring a proper fit. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others:

1. Removing the paper backing:
- After placing the ring with the cellophane side down over the flange, rub the paper firmly with your fingers to warm it up. This helps loosen the adhesive, making it easier to peel off the paper.
- If rubbing doesn't work, try using a fingernail to start lifting the paper at the inner circle closest to the stoma. Once you get a strip lifted, continue peeling while pressing the adhesive down with your other hand.

2. General application tips:
- Apply the Sure Seal directly to the wafer that's already on your skin.
- Work slowly, as the adhesive sticks immediately but strengthens over 24 hours.
- To remove the ring, catch an edge with a fingernail and peel it off, often in one piece.

3. Benefits of using Sure Seal Rings:
- They can extend the wear time of your appliance from 3-4 days to 5-8 days.
- They help contain minor leaks, giving you time to change before a major issue occurs.
- They provide extra waterproofing, which is great for swimming, hot tubs, and showers.
- The constant pressure helps keep the wafer snug and reduces seepage.
- Generally well-tolerated, even by those sensitive to most tapes.

4. Handling edge lift or size mismatch:
- Make sure the ring is centered, and gently stretch it to widen the inner opening if needed.
- Press the edge down firmly after removing the paper and warm it with your hand for a better seal.
- If a wound bed prevents adhesion, consider using an additional barrier like Nu-Hope Carbozinc paste or a thin hydrocolloid strip under that area before applying the ring.

5. Complementary or alternative products:
- SKIN-PREP Protective Wipes by Smith & Nephew can be applied to the skin before the appliance, with some users reporting no leaks when used with the ring.
- Nu-Hope Carbozinc paste can be used as a caulk around the stoma under the wafer.
- Eakin Cohesive Seals and Hollister Barrier Rings are different from Sure Seal but can be combined for extra protection.

6. Purchasing and insurance notes:
- The manufacturer and distributor is ALP Global, and you can contact them at www.alpglobal.com or 877-257-4562.
- The cost is approximately $2 per ring.
- Some users have noted that these rings are not covered by Medicare, though coverage may vary.
