Dark red color change in stoma - should I be worried?

This topic is about a person who, five months after their surgery, noticed that their stoma changed color from a tongue-pink to a very dark red over the past couple of weeks. They are concerned and wondering if this change in color is something to worry about. Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Healthy stomas typically range in color from pink to deep red. A darker or "ripe" red color often indicates good blood flow and is usually normal.

2. Be cautious if the stoma turns pale or white, as this might suggest poor blood supply. Deep purple or black colors could indicate more serious issues like ischemia or necrosis.

3. Since any sudden or significant color change can have various causes, it is recommended to contact a stoma nurse (WOCN), surgeon, or ostomy clinic for a professional evaluation.

4. There was a case where a stoma turned black, and a stoma nurse determined it was dried tissue, similar to a scab, and safely trimmed it. This highlights the importance of getting a professional assessment.

5. If you cannot access medical support locally, document the color change and try to get an appointment as soon as possible. Act immediately if the stoma darkens to a "midnight" color or if you notice other warning signs like pain or reduced output.
