Strange Bowel Movements 7 Months After Reversal: Seeking Advice

This topic is about someone who, seven months after having their ostomy reversed, started experiencing urgent, watery bowel movements each morning for three days. The stools were light in color and had an unusual consistency, similar to what they experienced during previous diverticulitis episodes. They initially avoided taking Imodium but later received medication from a gastroenterologist, which helped reduce the urgency after five days. However, the stools remained loose and oddly textured. A colonoscopy has been scheduled to investigate further, but their insurance will not cover the procedure. They also mention occasional mild discomfort in the lower left abdomen and are seeking advice from others who might have had similar experiences.

Here are some pieces of advice and insights shared by others:

1. Imodium (loperamide):
- Some people have safely used higher doses than the package directions, such as 12–18 tablets per day, but only under medical supervision.
- It's recommended to start with the labeled dose and gradually increase it, with a doctor's approval, to help reduce the frequency and urgency of stools.

2. Dietary adjustments to naturally thicken stool:
- Foods like bananas, white rice, white bread, potatoes, tapioca, and other low-fiber binding foods can help slow down transit and firm up the stool.

3. Possible causes and next steps:
- There might be a "relapse" or recurrence of diverticulitis after the reversal, which can be confirmed through imaging or a colonoscopy.
- The amount of bowel removed during the original surgery can affect ongoing stool consistency and frequency.

4. Navigating test costs and insurance:
- If the colonoscopy is ordered during an emergency department visit, some insurers might classify it as emergency care and cover it.
- It's worth consulting with a primary care physician to see if they can justify the test differently or arrange for lower-cost alternatives.

5. Shared experiences:
- One person experienced similar symptoms, required long-term high-dose Imodium, and eventually returned to an ileostomy.
- Others have noted that postoperative bowel behavior can remain unpredictable for years and may flare up intermittently.
