Crutches with a Colostomy: Risk of Further Prolapse?

This topic is about someone who has a colostomy and is dealing with concerns about using crutches due to a severe Achilles tendon problem. They have experienced stoma prolapses in the past and are worried that using crutches might cause another prolapse. They are seeking advice from others who might have been in a similar situation.

Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by others:

1. Many people have successfully used elbow (forearm) crutches after foot injuries without noticing any negative effects on their stoma or experiencing additional prolapse.

2. It is recommended to use elbow/forearm crutches instead of under-arm (axillary) crutches. This type of crutch reduces pressure on the shoulders and armpits, which is less likely to affect the stoma area.

3. The person is considering discussing with their orthopedic doctor about switching to elbow crutches, as they also have a bad shoulder and want to avoid aggravating it.

4. One member encourages sharing feedback on how the elbow crutches work out, expressing confidence that they should not harm the stoma.
