Dealing with Air in Night Bag

This topic is about dealing with the issue of air build-up in urostomy night drainage bags, which can be quite a nuisance. The problem occurs when the night bag inflates with air during sleep, sometimes so much that it causes the connector to pop off. Here are some practical tips to help prevent or reduce this issue:

1. **Vinegar-Residue Reaction**:
- The air build-up might be due to a reaction between vinegar (used for cleaning) and calcium carbonate in urine, producing carbon dioxide gas.
- To fix this, make sure to thoroughly rinse the night bag with plain water after cleaning with a vinegar solution, or use a new night bag each night.

2. **Positioning & Tube Support**:
- Use a thigh or knee strap with a loop to hold the night-bag tube. This helps keep the daytime pouch in a vertical position, allowing for continuous drainage and reducing airlocks, no matter how you move in bed.

3. **Bag / Connector Choice and Handling**:
- Some combinations of pouches and night bags are more prone to air-lock issues. Trying different brands or models might help.
- If drainage stops during the night, standing up and gently shaking or moving the tubing can usually restart the flow.

4. **Cleaning Methods That Avoid Foaming**:
- Cleaning agents that leave suds or froth can cause temporary air pockets. Make sure to rinse thoroughly after using any soapy or disinfectant wash to eliminate any leftover foam.

These tips should help manage the air build-up in your urostomy night drainage bag, making your nights more comfortable.
