Stoma Shrinking: Tips for Managing a Shorter Stoma

Managing a stoma that is shortening or sinking can be a bit challenging, especially when it comes to preventing leaks. If your stoma has started to shrink and only a small tip is protruding, it might be difficult to secure a barrier ring properly, and you might be concerned about leaks. Here are some helpful insights and advice to consider:

- It's quite normal for a stoma to change shape, sometimes lengthening or shortening due to the natural movement of intestinal muscles. However, it's always a good idea to consult with your original surgeon or a stoma nurse who is familiar with your specific situation, as they can provide the best guidance.

- If your stoma is sinking or sitting flush with the skin, switching to a convex barrier can help prevent leaks. Some options include:
1. Trying a Dansac shallow convex flange as a starting point.
2. Considering Coloplast Assura Integral Convexity flanges or base plates, which have been effective for some users. Convex barriers apply gentle pressure around the stoma, helping it to protrude slightly more and directing output into the pouch.

- If your stoma is very low, filling in skin dips and using paste instead of rings might be beneficial:
1. Pelican Cohesive Paste can be used to fill in creases and create a smooth surface.
2. Barrier rings might not hold well with a very short stoma, so paste could provide a better seal.

- For a compatible pouching system, you might try Coloplast Assura Inspire Midi soft-cover drainable bags, which can be attached to the convex base plate. Users have reported a typical wear time of 3 to 5 days without experiencing leaks.
