Seeking Relief for Stoma Irritation

When dealing with a stoma, skin irritation around the stoma, known as peristomal skin irritation, can be quite uncomfortable. This irritation can cause redness, burning, and itching. If you're experiencing these symptoms, here are some helpful tips and insights to consider:

1. **Layering Technique**: Start with a skin-barrier wipe, then dust with stoma powder. Wipe off any excess powder and repeat this cycle 2 to 3 times before applying your pouching system.

2. **Product Sensitivity**: Sometimes, irritation can be due to an allergic reaction to the products you're using, such as powder, spray, wipes, or even scented soaps.
- Try skipping the powder and/or barrier spray for a few days to see if your skin improves.
- Consider switching to a mild, unscented soap. Some people find that using a store-brand unscented soap works well for them.

3. **Soothing Agents**: Fresh aloe vera gel can be soothing. Dab it gently on the irritated area, making sure to use only the juice and not the sharp plant skin. Allow it to dry before applying any barrier products.

4. **Barrier Sprays/Sticks**:
- Some people find relief by applying two layers of barrier spray, drying each layer with a hair-dryer.
- Others use barrier sticks, like 3M Cavilon, letting them dry completely before adding powder, a barrier ring/seal, and the wafer.

5. **Dietary Factors**: High acidity or certain foods might worsen skin irritation and affect adhesion. A diet richer in vegetarian foods has helped some people reduce peristomal skin problems. Consulting a dietitian or dermatologist can provide personalized advice.

6. **Possible Yeast Infection**: Sometimes, what seems like simple irritation could be a yeast infection. If you suspect this, consult a physician about oral Diflucan (fluconazole) and consider using an over-the-counter anti-fungal stoma powder, often found in the foot-care section of pharmacies.

7. **Appliance Fit & Output**: Ensure the wafer hole is cut to fit snugly around the stoma to prevent effluent from contacting the skin, which can cause burning. A product like Osto Mart Lavender Barrier Cream can soothe irritation and help prevent it from coming back. Keeping your output thick by adjusting your diet and fluid intake can also help minimize skin damage.
