Need advice on using convex inserts with regular wafers

This topic is about managing leakage issues with ostomy wafers, specifically using Convatec plastic convex inserts with standard wafers. The person experiencing these issues has a stoma that protrudes well, but one side is nearly flush, creating a channel where output can leak under the wafer. They have tried different products and are seeking advice on how to effectively use these inserts and other solutions to control leakage.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Application & Wear-time
- Snap the plastic convex insert into the wafer before attaching the pouch.
- For those with an ileostomy, a wear-time of 2–3 days is common; expecting a week might be unrealistic for many.

2. Convex Product Options
- Convatec convex Durahesive wafers, either alone or with a Hollister/Adapt barrier, have helped some people eliminate leaks.
- The Convatec Eakin Ring is a soft, moldable option. Do not cut it; instead, stretch and mold it snugly around the stoma, then place the flange over it. Warming the skin, ring, and flange with a hair-dryer can improve adhesion.
- If using a Hollister Adapt Ring, mold it instead of cutting, as cutting may cause stinging, undermining, and bleeding.
- Convatec plastic convex inserts have been successfully used during pregnancy to stop leaks.

3. Additional Leak-Prevention Aids
- Stoma powder can sometimes control seepage better than paste.
- Edgepark "MicroSkin" is an ultra-thin, clear adhesive flange promoted as leak-proof, even during activities like swimming and jogging. Free samples are available by calling 1-800-321-0591.
- Layering an Adapt Barrier Ring (Hollister) or Eakin Ring (Convatec) with convex wafers can provide extra security.

4. Skin Protection
- To soothe redness or acid burn, cleanse the skin, dab Milk of Magnesia on the irritated area, let it dry completely, dust with stoma powder, and then apply the flange. The alkaline Milk of Magnesia neutralizes acid, and the powder forms a protective crust.
- If swelling or irritation occurs with one convex product, trying a different convex option or switching from a ring-type to a plastic insert may help.

5. Other Brands Mentioned
- One person noted that Coloplast standard flanges lasted less than 5 hours for them, but individual results can vary.
