Persistent Post-Colostomy Drainage Issue

This topic is about dealing with persistent rectal mucus discharge after having a colostomy, which can be a challenging and distressing experience. Here are some insights and advice shared by others who have faced similar issues:

1. Some people have found that the only way to completely stop the discharge is through a surgical procedure called a proctectomy, which involves removing the rectum and closing the anal opening.

2. It's common for the defunctioned bowel or rectum to produce clear or whitish mucus for lubrication. This can sometimes lead to urgency and "phantom" bowel sensations.

3. If the mucus becomes foul-smelling or appears infected, short courses of antibiotic suppositories might be helpful. Glycerine suppositories can also be used to flush out accumulated mucus periodically.

4. Here are some management tips:
- When you feel the urgency, try sitting on the toilet. This can help empty the mucus and relieve any phantom pain.
- Consider using stick-on panty pads or liners and change them as needed to manage leakage and control odor.

5. It's important to keep seeking medical help. If local doctors are not responsive, try to consult a colorectal surgeon who can explore both surgical and non-surgical options with you.
