Flying with an Ileostomy Bag: Any Issues?

Flying with an ileostomy bag can be a new experience, especially if you haven't traveled by air since your surgery. If you're planning a trip to New Zealand or anywhere else, you might be wondering how air travel could affect your stoma pouch. Here are some helpful tips to make your journey smoother:

- Before you board the plane, make sure to empty your pouch. This can help you start the flight feeling more comfortable.
- Changes in cabin pressure are usually minor, but if you notice your pouch inflating while at altitude, you can visit the restroom to "burp" it and release any trapped air.
- It's a good idea to carry a full spare appliance set and extra pouches or supplies in your carry-on luggage. This way, you're prepared for any unexpected delays on the runway or during layovers.
- Keep all your ostomy items with you in a handbag or small carry-on bag, rather than placing them in checked baggage. This ensures you have everything you need within reach.
- Be aware that security scanners might flag your ostomy supplies. If this happens, be prepared for additional screening and calmly explain that these items are medical appliances.
