Showering with an Ostomy - Need advice on disc lifting and skin irritation

This topic is about managing showering with a new colostomy, particularly dealing with issues like the wafer or disc lifting, skin irritation, and keeping the appliance dry. Here are some helpful tips and insights:

1. Keep water off the wafer or faceplate:
- Turn your back to the shower spray or use a handheld shower head.
- Consider sponge baths or partial washes until your skin heals.

2. Physically cover the appliance:
- Use Glad Press’n Seal wrap over the wafer or a one-piece system.
- Try a 1-gallon plastic baggie taped on all sides, which can be reused.
- Look into purpose-made waterproof covers or create your own.

3. Reinforce the seal:
- Apply waterproof “pink tape” from Nexcare (3M) around the wafer to prevent edge breakdown.

4. Drying techniques after showering:
- Gently blot the wafer and pouch with a towel, then use a hair-dryer for a few minutes.
- Wear a robe afterward and flip the pouch upward to let the fabric absorb moisture.

5. Product sampling or switching:
- The wafer issue might be specific to the product; contact manufacturers for free samples.
- Some users of Hollister FlexTend 2-piece report no issues with showering.
- Coloplast SenSura users mention good adhesion with only minor edge lift in very hot water.

6. Soap and skin care:
- Use non-perfumed, non-oily soaps like “yellow Dial” or “Simple” bar soap.
- Skin generally becomes tougher a few weeks after surgery, and problems usually decrease over time.

7. General healing tips:
- Limit full showers until surgical wounds and skin calm down; daily sponge baths are a good alternative.
- Keep the peristomal skin dry and avoid letting water directly hit the wafer.

8. Further resources:
- Explore online communities and information at www.ostomy.org and www.ostomyland.org for more tips and product advice.
