Pain and Issues with a Reversible Colostomy

This topic is about someone who has been living with a reversible colostomy for over six months and is experiencing ongoing pain and a burning sensation around the stoma. They are concerned that this discomfort might be linked to previous radiation treatments and are looking for advice on how to manage these issues.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Experiencing continuous pain six months after surgery is not typical. It is important to contact your surgeon or gastroenterologist as soon as possible for a thorough assessment.

2. Inquire with your surgical team about the timing of the colostomy reversal. Many surgeons plan for the reversal around 6 to 8 months after the initial surgery, assuming that healing and overall health are on track.

3. Try to determine if the burning sensation is due to skin irritation caused by mucus or output coming into contact with the skin around the stoma. Look for any changes in skin color, bumps, or raw areas.

4. If you notice skin irritation, consider using ostomy-specific skin care products. These can include skin barrier wipes, protective powders, barrier rings, or sprays. Applying these before putting on the pouching system can help protect and heal the skin.
