Hernia Pain After Stoma: What to Expect?

Experiencing and managing a hernia after stoma surgery can be a challenging journey. A hernia in this context is a condition where part of the intestine pushes through the abdominal wall near the stoma. Here's what you might want to know about how it feels and how to manage it:

- Physical signs and discomfort:
- A hernia often appears as a bulge near or behind the stoma. You might notice a visible or palpable lump.
- The pain can vary. Some people experience a constant dull ache, while others feel bloating or sharper pain, especially if the hernia presses on the stoma and causes a build-up of gas or stool.
- Touching the area might increase the soreness.

- Recurrence and surgery considerations:
- Hernias can come back even after being surgically repaired. One person shared that they had three hernias repaired during a reversal operation, but one returned 10 months later.
- Repeated surgeries might weaken the abdominal tissues, which could make future hernias more likely.

- Non-surgical management:
- Hernia support belts can provide relief and might help prevent additional hernias. An adjustable hernia belt from CUI International was mentioned as helpful.
- Some people create custom devices for support. For example, one person made a 1 cm-thick ring that fits around the stoma and is held by an elasticated belt. This reduced discomfort but required a lot of trial and error to get right.

- Symptom monitoring:
- Keep an eye out for times when the hernia shifts and blocks the stoma, causing sudden pain and swelling. This might need medical attention.

- Emotional aspect:
- It's normal to feel anxious about the possibility of more surgery. Looking for non-invasive solutions and talking to others who have been through similar experiences can help manage these feelings.
