Struggling with Low Ileostomy Output: Advice Needed

This topic is about someone who recently had ileostomy surgery and is concerned about having a lower stoma output than expected. They are producing about 400 cc of output per day, while their healthcare team anticipated around 800 cc. The person is on a low-residue diet and is drinking plenty of fluids but is unsure if they should be worried or how to increase their output.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. The most important thing is that there is some output. If there are no symptoms like cramping, bloating, or pain, the current output volume might not be a problem.

2. It's common for output to be low right after surgery. It usually increases as the body heals and appetite returns, which often happens within a month.

3. It's normal for body fluids to shift. Sometimes ileostomy output decreases while urine output increases, and vice versa.

4. Keep drinking plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration and kidney stones, as the ileum now absorbs more water.

5. Try to relax and give your digestive system time to adjust. Keep asking questions and pay attention to how you feel.
