Stoma level with tummy after hernia repair - is this normal?

This topic is about dealing with a stoma that lies flat with the skin after a parastomal hernia repair. The person who shared their experience had surgery at the end of October and noticed that their stoma was flush with the skin, leading to leaks and skin irritation. They are seeking advice on how long this might last and how to protect their skin until their follow-up appointment.

Here are some helpful suggestions and insights:

1. Consider using a convex skin barrier or wafer. This type of product can help push the stoma outward, creating a better seal and reducing leaks.

2. Try adding a moldable ring:
- Eakin Cohesive rings can be adjusted by stretching, cutting, or doubling them to fit around a flat or side-discharging stoma.
- Hollister Adapt rings are known for being very sticky but easy to remove with an adhesive remover.

3. Moldable rings are often preferred over paste for a longer-lasting and more reliable seal, especially when used with a convex wafer.

4. Follow a skin protection routine:
- Clean and thoroughly dry the skin around the stoma.
- Apply a protective film like 3M Cavilon No-Sting Barrier wipes or spray, and let it dry before attaching the wafer.
- If the skin is already irritated, use the "crusting" technique by alternating stoma powder with barrier film before applying the convex wafer and ring.

5. Seek professional advice from a Wound, Ostomy & Continence Nurse (WOCN) to evaluate the stoma and ensure the products fit well.
