Considering Ileostomy Reversal After Small Bowel Resection

This topic is about someone who has been living with an ileostomy since April after having about 2.5 feet of their small bowel removed. They are curious about the possibility of reversing the ileostomy but have been informed by their doctor that intra-abdominal adhesions might make this difficult or even impossible. They are looking for advice or experiences from others who might have faced similar situations.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

- Adhesions, which are bands of scar tissue, form after every abdominal surgery. Surgeons are experienced in managing them.

- A common approach to dealing with adhesions and considering a reversal is to start with a diagnostic laparoscopy. This is a minimally invasive procedure, often called "keyhole" surgery, where the surgeon makes 2 to 4 small incisions to look inside the abdomen.

- Based on what the surgeon finds during the laparoscopy and your prior consent, they might proceed with the reversal, switch to an open surgery, delay the procedure, or decide to leave the stoma as it is.

- It's important to keep a list of questions you have and don't hesitate to ask for a longer consultation if you need it. Remember, there are no "stupid" questions when it comes to your health.

- Make sure you feel completely comfortable with the surgical plan before giving your consent. Take all the time you need to make your decision.

- There are adhesion-barrier wraps that can be used during surgery to help reduce the formation of new adhesions. Some people have reported positive results with these, although they are still being studied in clinical trials.
