Seeking Solutions for Nighttime Bag Leaks

This topic is about finding solutions to reduce night-time leaks from an ostomy bag. If you're experiencing this issue, here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others who have faced similar challenges:

1. Try changing your sleep position. Many people find that sleeping on the side opposite the stoma can help reduce leaks.

2. Improve the fit and seal of your wafer, especially if you're using a Coloplast 2-piece system:
- Cut the wafer opening about 1/8 inch larger than your stoma. If your stoma angles downward, make the hole slightly elliptical.
- Warm both the wafer and paste before applying them.
- Use a full length of Coloplast Strip Paste around the opening to fill any gaps.
- Clean your skin with baby wipes, shave any hair, and apply a skin barrier like 3M Cavilon spray.
- After applying the flange, tape the entire outer edge with 3M Transpore tape for 10-12 hours to prevent movement and help the paste fill empty spaces.
- If using a 2-piece pouch, make sure to close and tape the Coloplast bag lock to prevent it from opening during the night.

3. Consider using convex products. Switching to Coloplast Extended Wear Convex one-piece pouches with a Coloplast Brava ring has helped some users stop leaks and extend wear time to 7 days.

4. Explore different barrier rings and paste options:
- Eakin Seals or Hollister Adapt Barrier Rings can be warmed with a hair-dryer and applied over skin protected with Cavilon. Ensure the stoma is dry before application.
- Convatec Stomahesive Paste can be dried and shaped, which some find easier to handle.

5. If rings or seals still leak, try using rollable or strip pastes like Coloplast Strip Paste. They provide more material to fill gaps and are often cheaper than rings.

6. When removing the wafer, do it slowly. The paste residue usually stays on the wafer, leaving only the tape adhesive on your skin.

7. Consider an alternative management strategy like daily colostomy irrigation. This can be life-changing for some, as it may eliminate the need to wear a pouch most of the time, but it should be approved by your medical team.

8. General guidance includes warming products, keeping skin dry, using a barrier film, taping wafer edges, and experimenting with different manufacturers and methods until you find the combination that works best for your body shape and output.
