Craving Pickles for Gut Health - Anyone Else?

This discussion is about a person with an ileostomy who experiences strong cravings for pickles, which they believe might be linked to their gut health. They have a de-functioned J-pouch and often deal with pouchitis, an inflammation that can be quite uncomfortable. To manage this, they use a steroid rectal foam called COLIFOAM.

Interestingly, they find themselves occasionally craving sour, brined pickles and will eat a whole jar in one go, mixing them with cherry tomatoes, pickle brine, and dark soy sauce. After satisfying this craving, they don't feel the need for pickles again for several weeks. They suspect that these cravings might be their body's way of signaling a need for the probiotic bacteria found in fermented pickles. They also mention a family member with IBD who experienced similar food cravings that seemed to help with their symptoms.

The person is curious if other ostomates have experienced similar cravings or have found certain foods that help with gut-related discomfort. Here are some insights and advice shared by others:

1. Several people confirm having similar cravings for pickles. One person mentioned craving pickles during pregnancy, and another noted that their young grandson enjoys drinking pickle juice.

2. Someone provided additional information on the benefits of fermented foods for gut health, which can be found at: http://www.akealife.com/blueprint-for-life/nutrition/fermented-foods/

3. Many agree that the body often signals what it needs. For example, sudden cravings for oranges or grapes might indicate a need for vitamin C, while salty food cravings are common among ileostomates to replenish sodium lost in their output.
