Hubz had a regular checkup with the oncologist on Friday (his numbers are improving), and as they were asking how he's feeling since surgery, they became curious about how he's doing so well with his ostomy, both physically and mentally. He credited doing research online, trying different things, and especially the support from this group. They were asking because they see so many patients struggling to adjust.

We described this group as folks with every kind of ostomy, some for days while others for decades, but all willing to share what's worked for them with the caveat that every individual is different.

We described the most valuable element as feeling like you're not alone in this. That really piqued their interest, and they wrote down the link. It seems they had a few people in mind that might benefit from the community and thanked us for telling them about it.

You know, we can't remember exactly who we learned about this group from, but we're grateful for it every day! Thank you all! 🌻

That is great news. I hope they can spread the word to be able to help some who are having a bad time. You're a great example of how working with a team of people who have been where you're going and knowing some of the things the doctors don't have firsthand knowledge of in day-to-day life.

If everyone had a partner like you to help them, it would save some people from problems.

I have also mentioned this site to my surgeon, stoma and wound care nurses, and even friends. It's so much more pleasant than social media, with real and kind people! My hubby looks at it, too.

Lovely to hear this! What I love about this site is that you can get help and support, and at the same time, feel like you are doing something to help others as well. Bonus!

I'm very new to this site, but I am already aware that people on here care and are willing to share experiences and ideas to help you.

Although I have a wonderful partner, sometimes I still feel alone as there is no one to talk to who truly understands because they have been through similar surgery.

Sami (my stoma) arrived totally unexpected, and I feel like it's a baby who I have to look after and care for all on my own! Almost 4 months old now, and we are settling down into a routine but still learning how much stuff my baby needs me to take out with me in case of an accident.

It's great to hear that the doctor was curious about helpful coping skills! So many disregard the importance of emotional well-being, the power of perspective, and belonging.

I think the sense of community on this site is wonderful for newbies and seasoned ostomates alike.

Sharing is caring :)

I can totally understand! My :baby: arrived a year ago, and it does feel like that! My hubby asked me how I can deal with that, and I told him I have changed many diapers in my lifetime, and I refer to “Willie” as my baby's diaper needs changed! One has to laugh; those of us who understand, this site is awesome, and my daughter found this site shortly after my surgery, and it's been a lifesaver! Welcome, Shelly C! ❤️
