Bleeding Around Stoma: Anyone Else Experienced This?

This topic is about experiencing bleeding around the stoma, particularly at the stitch sites, which can be concerning for those with a new stoma. Here are some helpful insights and advice on managing this issue:

- If you notice slight oozing, similar to bleeding gums, when cleaning or changing your appliance, this can be normal. However, if the bleeding is heavier or doesn't stop, it's important to contact your stoma nurse or doctor right away.

- It's common for new stomas to bleed easily, especially at the stitch sites or if they get irritated during pouch changes.

- Some surgeries might use surgical glue instead of stitches. In both cases, minor bleeding can occur if the area is accidentally rubbed.

- If the opening of your appliance is cut too large, it can injure the skin around the stoma, causing a raw, burning ring that may bleed. Make sure the wafer or baseplate opening is cut or molded closely to the stoma to protect the skin and help it heal.

- Skin burns around the stoma usually improve once the opening is resized and protected. Healing might take a week or more, so be patient and gentle with the area.
