Adhesive(?) leaks when showering?

Good day everyone,

I have a question for the group.

Does anyone notice that when they take a shower that a “slime” leaks out from their wafer?

I notice after bathing that a “slime”, that I am assuming it is from the water mixing with the adhesive, is around the edges of the wafer?

Today wasn’t the first day that I experienced this. I have experienced this with every shower.

Does anyone else experience this? Am I not putting my wafer on correctly? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks everyone!

My first thought was that perhaps your water is too hot. However, it is common for the stoma to excrete a slippery liquid. Mucus perhaps?

If you used stoma powder, that's slimy when it gets wet.

Slippery subject! 🤷‍♂️

Hi Crossley. Ya know, I think it’s all about feelings. I don’t mean the pain feelings which could control everything. I mean the feelings inside our heads, our hearts and even our souls. I mean the feelings of who we are now compared to who we were; how we accept our situation or maybe we don’t. My wife asked how I felt and I said, “like crap”. She asked what hurt and I answered, “Nothing hurts, well, everything hurts, I don’t know, It all sucks.” That was a long time ago. You question if your feelings are normal. How normal is it to relocate your butt hole to your belly where it’s usually in the way of your belt and, you know. But that’s where we are and for lots of us we are so much better off than we were before, physically. Emotionally, psychologically, well, that might be a different story. I believe talk therapy is wonderful if we could find a real empathic or sympathetic listener. So guess what! I found MAO and began “talking” with a keyboard with some of the wisest, kindest most sympathetic and compassionate folks on the planet. Regardless of where we’ve been, lots of folks here have been there and worse places and found their way back healthier and happier. We really do help each other.
Keep “talking”,
Mike

I have a sigmoid colostomy, 3 years post op. Use Hollister 2 piece system. Shower all the time with the bag on. Since I'm lazy, many times the bag still has a little "treasure" in it. I use hot water, and don't shield the bag from water flow. Get it nice and soaked.

Never leaks, and the wafer adhesive fabric edges remain stuck.

Afterwards, use paper towels to blot up excess water and dry it. Sometimes snap on a new bag. Many times don't.

I've taken up to 4 showers with the same wafer on. No slime, no leaks, no problem.

My colostomy has thick, pasty output, rarely any liquid.

Yes i will get a little slimy edges on my waffer sometimes after a shower. I press the edges with a towel to keep what adhesive is left and push any moister out. I then dry with heater or blow dryer!

I use the same set up as Mr. Beach boy

But I'm lazy and don't want to waste time drying, sooo I put a plastic stoma cap over everything. It has its own belt or can connect to Hollister belt.

That way it stay fairly dry.

Give it a try!

My best attribute is lazy. I always figure out the easiest way to get something done. The most fun was at work. A coworker would watch me doing an assembly procedure, then tell me "No, here's a better way to do it." I'd happily step back and let dufus finish the job for me while I relaxed... pays the same.

I made a little shower curtain, keeps direct spray off. I think it helps.

Yes the first shower after putting a new bag on outside edge of my wafer has slime around it I just wipe it with toilet paper then have no more problems, after 4 or 5 showers wafer starts to feel hard but never affects my adhesive from doing it's job.

I thought it was just me but I think it's the ceramide?? The medicated part that's infused in the bags? I think so anyway..

Could be wrong as I'm fairly new to all this bag malarkey.

🤣

Be safe and well

Rocks - I think it's the adhesive getting wet. I shower will a belly band on. It stills gets wet, but holds everything together. Then I dry it really well when I get out. Take care, Diana

TJ & Diana, thank you for responding as you did, I thought I was going to be the only person who experienced this weird sliminess.

I was wondering if i was doing something wrong when adhering my wafer to my belly. I typically put my pouch in a “slicker” when I shower to keep the equipment as dry as possible. But in reality it only fits the bag, so the wafer does get wet. You may be on to something with your ceramides comments.

I was worried I would be the only person who could screw up sticking a wafer to their own body SO badly that the wafer emitted a “slime”. (It reminds me of a snail’s trail….)

I may have to change shower equipment and wear something that is more comprehensive so the wafer stays dry.

Thanks everyone, I will be sure to call Ghostbusters next time I get slimed. 🤣

As a newbie I’m not yet ready to go bagless in the shower and I’m also still working out some adherence issues. I’ve been using these bag covers I found on Amazon. They have gauze in the center and are basically tegaderm around the rest. Works great for me for now

Stoma won't be affected by water. You can soap up your stoma pal... won't hurt him. But... don't use soap containing fragrance, lotions, or dyes. These chemicals interfere with wafer adhesion.

Thanks BB. It’s just for peace of mind since I have to use a transfer bench and sit for my showers so I’m in there a bit longer than most. I can also enjoy my girly soaps and I don’t have to rush! 😊

Yes, always a good idea to go slow in the shower. Also, go slow drying off. Especially if showering with no bag on. Gotta pay attention to where the towel is at all times. Don't want to drag a towel edge across your stoma..... ask me how I know 😉

I can only imagine! Sounds like a question for the one and only Flabby? 🤔

Yes my drinkin' pal....Flabby. Advisor to the love sick, stoma challenged, and just plain dense. When alerted about my bath towel mishap, she chuckled and related these true words: "Betcha don't do that again.... dufus."
