Desperate for Help - Constant Leaking Around Stoma

Living with a colostomy can sometimes bring unexpected challenges, like dealing with leaks around the stoma. If you're experiencing frequent leaks, you're not alone, and there are several strategies you might find helpful. Here are some practical tips and insights shared by others who have faced similar issues:

1. Try using Coloplast strip-tape paste to create an extra barrier around the stoma opening. Make sure your skin is clean and dry before applying, use a skin-prep product, and briefly warm and dry the area with a hair dryer for better adhesion.

2. Although irrigation might not be suitable for everyone, some people find that using Coloplast irrigation kits helps regulate output and reduces unexpected flow.

3. Consider switching to a convex pouching system, such as the Coloplast Assura one-piece convex. This type of system can press the skin down and help block seepage. You can request free samples from Coloplast to see if it works for you.

4. Adding an outer waterproof seal, like Sure Seal Rings, over the wafer can catch leaks before they escape. This extra layer of protection might give you more confidence when you're out and about.

5. Even if your skin creases are minimal, applying a thin layer of ostomy paste around the flange hole can prevent leaks from undermining the seal.

6. Mouldable flanges that snugly fit around the stoma can be reinforced with strips of DuoDerm Extra Thin sheets. Some users report that this combination allows for up to five days of wear without leaks.

7. For very liquid output, some people have found success with Convatec two-piece precut wafers combined with paste. This setup is noted for virtually eliminating leaks when one-piece systems have failed.

These suggestions might help you find a more reliable solution to manage leaks and regain confidence in your daily activities.
