Second Ostomy Surgery Due to Crohn's Complications

This topic is about someone who is preparing for a second ostomy surgery due to complications from Crohn’s disease, specifically an abscess and a fistula. They are planning to have the abscess removed and their existing ostomy completely redone, which might include relocating the stoma. They are seeking advice from others who have undergone a full ostomy revision. Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by others:

1. Before your surgery, gather information from your surgeon and consider joining an ostomy support group. They can help you understand what to expect and how to adjust after the surgery.

2. Be aware that outcomes can vary. One person shared that they have had three stoma revisions. Their first stoma was ideal, but the second was not as perfect. Be prepared for the possibility that your new stoma might differ in size, shape, and location.

3. After your revision, take the time to reassess your pouching system. One person found that switching to a shallow (convex) pouch helped them adapt to an irregular stoma. However, they still developed a large ulcer, highlighting the importance of monitoring your skin carefully.

4. If your stoma is moved to the opposite side of your body, such as from the right to the left, be ready for a learning curve. You will need to adjust to new appliance placement and body mechanics.

5. Keep extra supplies on hand and consider donating any unused items. Sharing resources within the community can be beneficial as you try out new products.
