Effective Fixes for Odor in Hollister Products - Reinforcing Flange and Bag for Odor-Free Days

This topic is about finding ways to reinforce a Hollister flange and bag using household materials to prevent leaks and odors for more than four days. The originator of this method experienced persistent odors from specific points on their Hollister two-piece appliance and found a solution by mechanically sealing these areas. Here are the steps and additional advice shared:

1. To address the odor issues, the originator used double-layer duct tape, bathtub caulk, and super-glue to seal the appliance:
- Cut two half-circles of double-layer duct tape to fit under the outer side of the flange, and add smaller half-circles on the inner side.
- Apply a bead of ordinary bathtub caulk around the seam where the fabric meets the plastic ring and let it dry overnight.
- Use super-glue in the pouch-to-wafer threads before snapping the pouch on, ensuring it stays on for the full life of the wafer without smell or leaks.

2. For cutting duct tape, press it onto a flat wooden board, shape it with a penknife, and then peel it off. Sand the board periodically to avoid splinters that could reduce stickiness.

3. Safety considerations:
- Be cautious as household caulk, super-glue, and duct tape are not skin-tested. Prolonged skin contact may allow chemicals to enter the bloodstream. It's better to use products labeled safe for medical use.

4. Simple, skin-safe in-pouch odor helpers include:
- Tic Tacs, Altoids, or a few drops of alcohol-free mouthwash on toilet tissue.
- Hollister M9 drops, Hollister deodorizer, Na’scent, Safe and Simple.

5. External odor barriers:
- Flat-D Ostomy Charcoal Guard wraps the pouch with activated charcoal fabric.

6. Absorbent/odor control inserts:
- Use cut pieces of female panty liners or several toilet-tissue squares placed inside the pouch.

7. To reduce filter-related smells:
- Keep the filter clean and change the filtered pouch daily or every other day, especially after eating strong-odor foods.

8. Routine to minimize seal leaks/odor without industrial glue:
- Use a barrier ring under the wafer.
- Cut the wafer opening to closely match the stoma and apply Convatec Stomahesive paste around the hole.
- Lightly coat the flange with Vaseline before attaching the pouch for easier cleaning and a tighter snap.

9. Bag maintenance:
- Rinse the pouch with water at every emptying. Most users report 2-3 odor-free days per bag and 5-7 days per wafer.

10. Avoid using harsh chemicals like kerosene for adhesive removal.
