Speeding Up Recovery After Ileostomy Surgery

This topic is about recovering after ileostomy surgery, especially when you're feeling tired and eager to get back to your normal routine. The person who started the discussion is two weeks post-surgery and is looking for advice on how to speed up their recovery. Here are some helpful tips and insights shared by others:

- Walking: Start with short walks as soon as you can and gradually increase the time. Aim for 15 minutes, 2 to 6 times a week, even after you've fully recovered.

- Hydration & Electrolytes: Make sure to drink plenty of fluids. Some people find it helpful to add Gatorade with extra salt. If you're not drinking enough, IV fluids might be necessary.

- No Heavy Lifting: Avoid lifting heavy objects until your surgeon gives you the green light. This helps prevent hernias and supports healing.

- Rest & Sleep: Listen to your body and take naps if needed. It might take several weeks for your energy levels to return to normal.

- Nutrition & Supplements:
1. Use Imodium (loperamide) if you're experiencing high-output or diarrhea.
2. Consider taking a high-quality probiotic.
3. Try consuming 1 tablespoon of coconut oil a couple of times a day for extra calories and its antimicrobial benefits.
4. Add a liquid multivitamin/mineral supplement to your diet.
5. Collagen Hydrolysate (a water-soluble gelatin protein) can help with tissue repair and provide easily digested protein.

- Gentle Mental Engagement: Engage in relaxing seated activities like reading, knitting, or designing crafts. This can help reduce stress and keep your mind occupied while you're physically resting.

- Ongoing Support: Stay connected with ostomy forums and supportive peers. Sharing experiences and encouragement can be very helpful during recovery.
