Gentle methods for adhesive removal

This topic is all about finding gentle and skin-friendly ways to remove ostomy adhesives. The focus is on techniques and products that help protect your skin while making the process as easy and comfortable as possible. Here are some helpful tips and insights:

1. Remove wafers and pouches slowly and gently. Use an adhesive remover spray or wipe, with or without alcohol. Press the skin back toward your body while holding the wafer steady. This "push-skin, don’t pull-wafer" method helps separate the adhesive from your skin without causing damage.

2. Consider using gentle, alcohol-free adhesive removers:
- ConvaTec Sensi-Care Adhesive Remover Spray or Sensi-Care wipes are highly recommended. They are silicone-based and non-irritating.
- Brava Silicone Adhesive Remover Spray by Coloplast is another silicone-based option.
- Torbot N-hexane Adhesive Remover can be applied with an eyedropper or cotton pad. It dissolves adhesive, displaces water, and evaporates cleanly.

3. Silicone-based products are preferred because they do not leave a greasy residue, allowing new appliances to adhere properly. This was confirmed by a Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurse (WOCN) at a support group meeting.

4. You can obtain these products from:
- Edgepark Medical Supplies, which stocks Sensi-Care Releaser Spray.
- Byrom Healthcare, which supplies adhesive remover spray.
- ConvaTec customer service, which often mails Sensi-Care samples upon request.

5. For a gentle removal technique:
- Spray or wipe the remover around the wafer edge, wait a few seconds, then slowly peel the wafer while supporting your skin.
- Follow up with soft wipes and plain water, and dry the area thoroughly.
- Avoid ripping or rushing, as healthy skin is crucial for good adhesion.

6. Some people find that leaving a light adhesive residue can help the next wafer stick better. However, personal preference varies, and some users prefer a completely clean surface for comfort.

7. In terms of appliance comparisons, one member switched from ConvaTec bags to Coloplast and prefers Coloplast wafers. They find Coloplast bags smoother and more water-repellent in the shower.
