Reconnecting Small Intestine to Rectum Without J Pouch - Experiences?

This topic is about considering whether to undergo another surgery to reconnect the small intestine directly to the rectum, known as ileorectal anastomosis. The person is currently living with a stoma and is unsure if they should proceed with this surgery, especially after having multiple surgeries recently. They are seeking advice and experiences from others who have been through similar situations. Here are some insights and advice shared by others:

1. Allow yourself time to recover before making a decision. Many suggest waiting for a period of stable health before considering more surgery. You might even set a tentative date a few months ahead and reassess your readiness as it approaches.

2. It's perfectly okay to live with a stoma long-term. Some find that having a stoma can lead to a better quality of life compared to dealing with frequent bathroom visits or potential complications from reconnection.

3. Be aware of possible complications if you choose reconnection:
- There is a risk of stricture formation, which can cause frequent bowel movements and skin irritation.
- Direct connections from the ileum to the rectum might result in liquid stools and increased bathroom frequency. Discuss with your surgeon how to manage stool consistency and what to expect regarding bowel habits.

4. Prepare a comprehensive list of questions for your surgeon. Consider asking about the expected frequency of bowel movements, the risk of strictures, possible interventions if issues arise, and whether a future stoma would still be an option if the reconnection does not work out.

5. Know that you are not alone. Others are in similar situations, contemplating the same surgery and sharing the same concerns.
