Dealing with dry skin after ileostomy surgery - any advice?

This topic is about dealing with dry skin after having ileostomy surgery. The person who started the discussion has noticed their skin becoming very dry and scaly, despite using daily moisturizers and staying hydrated. They are looking for reasons why this might be happening and effective ways to treat it. They also mention that they are currently dealing with hypothyroidism, and their doctors are adjusting their treatment.

Here are some helpful suggestions and insights shared by others:

1. Try using Eucerin Original Moisturizing Cream. This is the solid cream that comes in a white screw-top jar, not the pump or tube. It's recommended because:
- It's often used as a base for prescription creams and burn therapy.
- One jar can last about a year.
- It costs less than $20 and is available in Canada at Shoppers Drug Mart, though stock may be limited.

2. Check your thyroid function. Many people have noted that chronic dry skin can be linked to thyroid issues, such as hypo- or hyperthyroidism. Thyroid disorders are frequently reported among those with ileostomies.

3. Consider warm bath therapy. You can add a small amount of baby oil to your bath water. After soaking, instead of rubbing your skin with a towel, wrap a towel around yourself and let your skin air-dry. This method can leave your skin moisturized for several days.

4. Be aware of the possible link to nutrient malabsorption with ileostomies. It's important to maintain adequate nutrients and hydration, even when using topical treatments.
