Rash from Plastic Bag Contact?

This topic is about dealing with skin rashes that some people experience when the plastic part of their ostomy pouch touches their skin. If you're facing this issue, here are some helpful tips and advice from others who have been in the same situation:

1. Topical treatments that might help:
- Corona Ointment, which is a veterinary ointment you can find at equine-supply stores, has been noted to help with irritation caused by plastic.
- Mycostatin (nystatin) powder is an antibiotic that can clear up rashes quickly.
- Clotrimazole 1% antifungal cream is available over-the-counter and some users have found relief within minutes of applying it.

2. Creating a physical barrier between the pouch and your skin:
- Consider using pouches that come with an integrated fabric cover to prevent the plastic from touching your skin.
- You can place a piece of cotton flannel or another soft cloth, shaped like a small "baby bib," between the pouch and your abdomen.
- Elastic barrier strips, such as Hollister Adapt or Coloplast Brava, can be applied along the top edge to keep the pouch from touching your skin.
- Spray-on skin barrier films can also provide an extra layer of protection.

3. Custom solutions:
- Some people have had success by creating personalized backplates from skin-friendly materials and attaching commercial pouches or sleeves to them. This approach can eliminate rashes and reduce leaks, though it may require some trial and error to get it just right.
