Advice for Managing Stoma Retraction from Personal Experience

This topic is about managing stoma retraction, which can be a challenging issue for those living with an ileostomy. The person sharing their experience has lived with an ileostomy for 22 years and discovered some personal triggers for stoma retraction. Here are the insights and advice they shared:

1. Food allergies and intolerances can play a significant role. For example, while black coffee is fine, adding cream, consuming large amounts of sunflower seeds, or eating eggs can trigger retraction. It's important to pay attention to how much of these foods you consume, as larger quantities seem to have a greater impact.

2. The quality of water, particularly untreated well water, can also be a trigger. The person found that switching to peroxide-treated water helped resolve this issue. Options for treating well water include installing a peroxide pump, which can be expensive, or simply adding hydrogen peroxide to drinking water that won't be boiled. Bath water might also benefit from this treatment.

Despite consulting medical professionals, no effective medical intervention was found, and the person wanted to avoid further surgery. By identifying and eliminating these triggers, they successfully prevented further stoma retractions.

Forum members expressed gratitude for the shared information, but no additional advice or product recommendations were provided.
