Passing gas without a colostomy bag?

This topic is about understanding why someone might still pass gas rectally after having a temporary colostomy. A colostomy is a surgical procedure where a part of the colon is diverted to an artificial opening in the abdominal wall, often due to conditions like severe diverticulitis. Even though the rectum is no longer connected to the active part of the bowel, some people notice they can still pass gas the usual way and wonder why this happens.

- It is quite common and usually harmless to pass rectal gas, and sometimes mucus, after a colostomy.
- The remaining part of the colon or rectum continues to produce mucus to keep the tissue healthy. Air can get trapped in this area and be released naturally.
- The sensory nerves and muscular reflexes in the rectum are still active, which means occasional gas can be passed even years after the surgery.
- It is important to seek medical advice if the discharge is painful, contains blood, or if there are other concerning symptoms.
