Poop Discharge 5 Years Post-Colostomy - Common and Non-Leakage Related

This topic is about a person who had a colostomy five years ago due to damage from radiation therapy for rectal cancer. The surgery involved diverting the colon to a stoma, but the rectum was left in place and open. Recently, they experienced an unexpected episode of brown, foul-smelling discharge from the rectum, which raised concerns. Here are some insights and advice related to this situation:

1. After the colostomy, the colon was redirected to a stoma, but the rectum was not removed or closed. This is a common practice when the rectum is not diseased, as removing it can lead to more complex surgery and potential complications.

2. The person has been managing minor daily bleeding and mucus seepage from the rectum with a pantyliner and iron supplements.

3. The recent episode of smelly brown fluid was investigated with a sigmoidoscopy, which ruled out any fistula or leak from the colon or stoma. The surgeon suggested that the discharge was likely residual stool that had been in the disconnected rectum, and it was not considered dangerous.

4. It is possible for what seems like stool to be present in the rectum even after several years. This could also be old blood from radiation damage, mixed with mucus. The smell might become stronger after sitting in the rectal cavity and interacting with anal glands.

5. If there is a suspicion of retained stool, an X-ray or a series of enemas can help confirm or rule out true impaction.

6. If symptoms persist or are confusing, it is important to seek a second medical opinion. Patients should feel empowered to request repeat tests if they have ongoing concerns.
