Abdominal pain after colostomy - Seeking advice on sitting discomfort

This topic is about someone who is experiencing abdominal pain and discomfort while sitting, 12 weeks after having a colostomy due to rectal cancer. They suspect they might have a parastomal hernia and are concerned about the lack of follow-up care from their healthcare providers. Here are some insights and advice that might help:

- It's still relatively early in the recovery process, and discomfort can be due to healing tissues and scar tissue formation. Some people find it takes several months for the pain to subside.

- It is standard to have a CT scan or similar imaging around the 3-month mark post-surgery. Make sure to insist on being scheduled for this to check for scar tissue, hernia, or other issues.

- If you feel persistent tugging or notice bulging, it could be a parastomal hernia or dense scar tissue. Only imaging can confirm this.

- If you're not getting the support you need, keep pressing the stoma nurses. If they remain unavailable, consider filing a formal complaint or seeking a second or third opinion. You can also ask your GP or hospital for a healthcare advocate to help speak on your behalf.

- For practical comfort while healing, try using a firm pillow against your abdomen when sitting or standing up. Spend more time lying down if it relieves pain, but continue gentle movement as much as you can tolerate.

- Discuss any ongoing pain with your surgeon. Some people have needed a second surgery to remove problematic scar tissue.

- If local hospital support is lacking, seek alternate resources. Contact stoma or ET nurses at other hospitals, even if they are farther away, for telephone or in-person advice. Look for local ostomy support groups, as meetings often include ET nurses and supplier representatives who can demonstrate new products and address issues.

- Do not settle for inadequate after-care. Keep pursuing the help you need until you receive proper assessment and support.
