Clip detachment issue with colostomy pouch - seeking advice

This topic is about dealing with the issue of colostomy pouch clips detaching unexpectedly, which can be quite stressful, especially when you're out and about. If you've experienced this, you're not alone, and there are several practical tips and solutions that might help you feel more secure and confident.

- Consider replacing the plastic ostomy clip with a small "squeeze" binder clip, often found in office supply stores. To use it, fan-fold the pouch tail a couple of times, then fold it to fit the width of the binder clip and clamp it. The handles can be folded down flat to prevent any discomfort. These clips are very secure and can last for months. It's a good idea to carry a spare just in case.

- Try the double-clip method by using two standard plastic clips on the same pouch tail for added security. Many people have found this method effective in preventing accidents.

- Regularly rotate or retire your clips. Each box of Convatec pouches comes with two clips, so switch to a new one when you've used about half the box of bags, and discard any old clips that might be worn out.

- Keep the pouch from getting too heavy by emptying it when it's about one-third full. This reduces the strain on the clip.

- For extra security, you can add a rubber band around the closed plastic clip. It's handy to keep a few rubber bands in your kit for emergencies.

- You might want to consider switching to drainable pouches with integrated Velcro-type closures. Some users have found Hollister pouches with Velcro to be reliable, and they eliminate the need for separate clips. Convatec and Coloplast also offer Velcro closures, though experiences can vary, so it might take some personal trial to find what works best for you.

- While clothespins can be used as temporary clamps for irrigation sleeves, they aren't recommended for everyday pouch wear.

- Always make sure the clip is positioned high enough on the neck of the pouch and that you feel or hear it snap shut before leaving the bathroom. This can help ensure it's securely fastened.
