Waterproofing an Ostomy for Swimming?

If you're looking to get back into swimming after having an ostomy, you're not alone. Many people wonder how to keep their ostomy appliance waterproof and whether swimming in a chlorinated pool will require more frequent changes of their pouch or wafer. Here are some helpful tips and insights to make your swimming experience enjoyable and worry-free:

1. Most modern ostomy pouches and wafers are designed to be water-resistant. For many, swimming feels similar to taking a shower.

2. Chlorinated pools are generally safe for your appliance. However, be cautious with hot tubs, as the higher temperatures can cause some wafers to soften or "melt" more quickly. It's a good idea to test how your system reacts first.

3. Start by entering the water for short periods. This will help you understand how your specific pouch and wafer react before you commit to longer swimming sessions.

4. Begin each swim with a fresh, well-adhered appliance. Avoid swimming with an appliance that is close to needing a change.

5. After swimming, gently pat the wafer area dry as soon as possible to maintain a strong seal.

6. Consider using reinforcement products for added security:
- Brava Elastic Barrier Strips can be placed around the flange to secure the edges.
- Wax adapt rings can help seal the stoma opening under the barrier.
- Hernia belts or standard ostomy belts can hold the pouch firmly against your body.
- Filter cover stickers, often supplied with pouches, can prevent water from entering the gas filter.

7. Allow new flanges or Brava strips time to set before getting in the pool. Avoid applying them immediately before swimming.

8. Be aware that gas buildup can cause the pouch to balloon. Covering the filter can help prevent water from entering and avoid any embarrassing situations.

9. Many swimmers find that regular weekly barrier changes are sufficient, even with daily pool use.
