Ostomy Belt: Are They Effective?

This topic is about ostomy belts and whether they are helpful for people who have an ostomy. People are sharing their experiences and advice on using these belts.

- General security: Many people find that even a simple 1-inch-wide stretch belt gives them a comforting sense of security and helps keep the wafer from lifting.

- Experimentation is key: Since belts can vary a lot, many users try several different ones before finding the right fit and tension that works for them.

- Adjustable Velcro models: Some users recommend Velcro-closing belts from CUI, which are easy to adjust. These belts can be obtained through an NHS prescription at no personal cost in the UK.

- Combined solutions for hernias: One person uses a general support belt from CUI along with another belt that has a buckle to apply direct pressure over the stoma. This helps manage a parastomal hernia while irrigating.

- Heavy lifting: A Supportex belt is suggested for activities like lifting or doing strenuous tasks. While belts haven't been proven to prevent hernias, wearing one during heavy activity seems sensible to some.

- Abdominal exercise: Daily core exercises are considered the most effective way to prevent hernias. A clinical trial is also starting to look into how exercise might help limit the growth of existing hernias.

- Psychological comfort: Many people say that belts mainly provide peace of mind, making them feel more secure in their daily activities.
