Weird Smell from Adapt Lubricant/Deodorizer - Anyone Else?

I have a question about the Adapt lubricant/deodorizer. I just started using it and I’ve noticed it has a weird smell. Has anyone else noticed this? Or is it just me??🤭

The weird earthy kind of smell is normal.

M9 drops definitely smell weird. I think anyway.

Yep! I normally use Brava Deodorant Lubricant, but it was out of stock, and my stoma nurse sent me a bottle of the Hollister one. As I wear a rather large high output bag, I need to use 20 squirts every time I empty my bag. John usually complains that my ileostomy stinks so bad that it ruins the entire house for a while (as if his BMs smell like roses!) - 😂 - I immediately smelled the highly chemical odor when I first emptied my bag, and it was rather funny that not even after a day my husband begged me to stop using it!
The Brava one's scent is like baby powder, which I rather like.

No issues at all using it.

It just might be my own nose that knows this. 🤔 Then again, who knows? 🤷‍♂️

Apparently I don't have a nose because I don't notice any smell with the Adapt. Lol

It does not always help if you have an ileostomy which really likes nothing better than to truly pong!! (I have to laugh about it now, but when I first had to empty my bag in the hospital, I actually threw up all over the bathroom.... It was that bad! My 👃 took a bit of time to adapt 😉)

I would not have called it earthy, to me it smelled rather chemical, and very offensive. Hubby often complains that the smell of my ileostomy is terrible, and that he's thinking of making a long drop for me in the garden, so that I don't pollute the house! I told him to go ahead with his plans for a long drop, but that he could use it, instead of me, as his BM's smell like I remember my grandfather's used to smell when I was just a kid!! It certainly doesn't smell like roses!

I resemble that thought...!

Perhaps you both need to **adapt** your noses!

I'm to have surgery on 2/15. If I have a colostomy, I won't need a lubricant? My head is a bit swimming from the firehose of information.

It's alot to take in. Most colostomates use lubricant in their pouches. Depending on how much colon you have left, your output is likely to be thick. Lubricant helps thicker output slide to the bottom of the bag. 

Your stoma nurse will help you find an appliance that works for you. At its simplest form, this is a baseplate or wafer that attaches to your skin and a bag to collect output. The appliance can be 1 piece where bag and wafer are attached together or 2 piece where the two parts snap together like Tupperware.  

There's all sorts of variations and additional parts that may be added if needed.  But don't worry about that stuff right now. Your stoma nurse should ensure you can apply the appliance before you leave the hospital. Make sure they do this. 

Depending on your hospital and maybe your insurance, you may get a stoma nurse who will visit and help you with the system for a few weeks. Regardless, if you have problems with leaks, we can also help you at this point. You are not alone with it. 

Yes, SusanT you are so right 👍🏻. My output is on the thicker side unless I have diarrhea. I use a two piece system because I like that I can clean and rinse as often as I want. I am a clean freak so I drain and rinse more often than wait for it to fill up. I also like to wipe around my stoma 😊

@Liger.. understand about your 2 piece. Same as me.

Do you rotate the bag to rinse? With the opening facing up, you can put a little water in, close it, swish it around, and rotate it back to empty. That cleans the stoma without removal.

I saw on here that water in the bag by rinsing weakens the O-ring.

But fact vs. fiction. I do it all the time. Still get 8 days wear with an ileo.

Just curious how you clean the stoma area - won't need to remove the bag. 👍

I wouldn't touch the stoma, but that's me.

Yes 👏🏻. I do. Then, I take the bag off and wipe around the lip area with a baby wipe (fragrance free etc), just to get any leftover that doesn’t rinse out. Most of the time there isn’t any. I have never had a problem with rinsing weakening the o-ring🤔.

I use a 2-piece system with closed end bags. I love being able to remove soiled bag, clean around the stoma, and put on a fresh bag. It just feels cleaner. 

If I switch to drainable bags I may try something like the rinsing that warrior describes but we'll see if I like it.

Ah, the lip area... I understand the reason for that.

I have trouble resnapping the bag though... so I don't bother.

Once the appliance is installed, I leave it for 7-8 days. Do the "rotation rinse" and back to work.

What's your wear time? Do you replace just the bag or flange and bag?

Alex T. offered that advice: the "rotate and swish." A little warm water in there feels good too and cleans the bag nicely. You may need to repeat the process.

I dump into a container, not into the toilet, as that makes such a mess! The container empties into the toilet by hand.

The container easily dumps and is a cleaner way, in my opinion.

You might be sold on it. It definitely will save on bag costs too.

Whew! It's not just me that notices the smell of M9 drops. So many declare it's the gold standard for odor elimination in ostomy pouches but the smell of it nauseates me. I tried ConvaTec's Esenta lubricant deodorant — didn't smell or eliminate odors. Never tried Adapt. I found Coloplast's Brava lubricating deodorant to work very well w/o an obnoxious smell. I now use Revel! Lubricant/Deodorant, it's an excellent lubricant — many have complained of it leaking from their pouch. I have experienced no leakage but I do use a closed-end pouch. Best of all, I experienced no pancaking. Like Brava, no obnoxious smell. I tried others that didn't have obnoxious smells but they were not good lubricants.

I use Revel! primarily for it's lubrication and use other means for odor control. For odor control, I use 10 ml of hydrogen peroxide, 3 ml of water, a cotton ball with "tea tree" essential oil on one side and "peppermint" essential oil on the other side.

Oh my goodness I must try the essential oil and peroxide! Thanks ☺️

I probably could get many days, but I remove everything every three to four days. I do change my bag if I have a great deal of diarrhea. I am still learning what I can eat and what not to.

Meanwhile, back in California... the lady changes her appliance every 3-4 days, and the issue is because of... oh wait, clean freak?! Me too, but... if there's no pending doom, leak, or smell, why so often? 🤔

I'm not saying don't. No, if you prefer that, great, but are there no cost concerns? Or time better spent on those cute grandkids? .. 👶🤔

Well I'm getting 7 days wear time and could probably go longer with my current system. I'm not sure I can stand to keep the same drainable bags for that long. 

I started with a drainable and hated it. I had so much trouble emptying the pouch I ended up with it all over my legs and the toilet.  But with all the diarrhea I've been having, I'm thinking it might be more practical. Switch in closed bags when it gets thicker. 

I might also be crazy... we'll see
