Hello, any help with finding the best electric body hair shavers for removing hair around my stoma? Right after my operation, the first time I used a razor was a big mistake, lol! The stoma nurse said to get an electric body hair trimmer, which I have, a Norelco, which seems to work just okay. Anyone out there use anything that they are really happy with? 😊

Been using this for over 10 years now... totally bulletproof and does a great job. Get a set of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and you're done. It's usually $18 on Amazon.

I use a razor myself, but I learned a trick with an empty roll of toilet paper, you know. That cardboard tube? I don't know the diameter of your stoma, but the diameter of that tube fits over the stoma quite well to lather the area around it and shave.

Protecting the stoma, I found this helps.

That sounds like a good idea, and I'm glad it works for you. The storm nurse said to never use a razor, which I learned from the first time I tried that. But I'm happy it works for you. Thanks for your response.

You're welcome. As you said, the first time you tried it, was? Without protecting the stoma?

Or with protecting it?

When you have been around the block a few times on this site, you will get to know certain things that work and don't work, and get to know that professionals in the field are book smart, not street smart, a.k.a. stoma smart. 😳

There are a lot of contradictions between "them" and us.

Does your nurse sport a stoma?

No, the first time I shaved was with a razor, and I just got a nasty razor rash from that. It took about a month to go away. I haven't done it since, and everything's been okay, but I just wish my electric body shaver would do a better job. I just wondered if there are any good ones out there that really work for people.

I have to admit that the first time I shaved with a razor, I got it perfect, and I was able to go right up to the stoma without hurting it. That's a nice thing you did with the toilet paper roll; that's a good idea. It's just the nasty razor rash I got afterward, but I did not use lather, so maybe I should try that. I don't know; the rash I got was so bad from the first time I'm afraid to try a razor again.

I don't need to shave the parastomal area, so I can't advise specifically.

However, a lifetime of shaving my legs, etc. has taught me that you risk a rash whenever you shave dry. I wouldn't dare shave that area without plenty of water and shaving cream.

I use a Phillips OneBlade. Works well, no complaints.

I use Dove face soap. Never a dry razor on that area.

The razor is a 5-blade type. Works well for me, but never go at it dry. I can see why it would cause issues.

The toilet roll tube I learned from people here. All kinds of tricks and tweaks because we live it every single day and learn from it.

I use this, never a problem.

No, I don't use the pink guard, just the blades, and it gets the hair down to almost the skin, so I don't get ingrown hairs or razor burn.

Razor, but I'm not hairy like a gorilla.

Hi, I just use a cheap twin-blade disposable razor and a good pair of tweezers for plucking around the stoma. πŸ‘

Hi Bro.........thanks for the tip! But I gotta wonder.......how big is your stoma??? Mine would be totally lost inside a toilet paper roll. Mine is only about 3/4" in diameter, so I just use the roll that my 3M Micropore tape comes on, and that fits it perfectly. Newbies should know that even pumping into your stoma can cause it to bleed, so even if you think you'll be careful with whatever razor you use.......it's best to use a guard of some sort when working around your stoma. This goes double if you don't clot fast when you bleed.

Hi Maico250.........do you have one? If so......how about some pics? My grail is an '83 490 Sand Spider.......despite the decrease in quality from 1982. Always loved that monster. Someday.........

It's a Norelco Bodygroom 7000, and it was in the $60 to $70 range, I believe.

I knew it from birth, bro. I was always larger than you. 🀭

1 inch, 3/8 dia stoma. The fun part is when it decides to flex and inflate; the paper roll won't come off easily. Ugh.

What else could be used if using a razor to protect the stoma?

A Dixie cup? Those tiny ones? A shot glass?

Maybe a deep socket if you're Tim the Toolman?

Now I'd like to see Snap-on sell that! πŸ˜†

Great topic. My husband is 5 weeks post-ileal conduit urostomy. His stoma sutures finally dissolved. Praise the Lord! He has been using an old trimmer (no longer that sharp) on his razor to trim hair around the stoma. He was just talking this morning about getting a new electric razor. I will check out that Panasonic. Many thanks headed your way πŸ™πŸ».

So is yours like mine? It's rather large, and just the motions of wiping around it shrink it greatly. My surgeon has never heard of this. Am I the only one?

Are you the only one whose stoma shrinks when you wipe around it? Maybe. It doesn't phase mine at all.

Time, allowing it to flex and relax, allows mine to deflate.

Sometimes ignoring it, too, helps.

But it's usually a time suck that allows me to apply the flange.

30 to 90 minutes!!

I use a beard trimmer I have just for trimming that area only.
