Mail-in ballots haven't been counted yet.

Ash

Look at your diet; that's probably the first place to start. There is a lot of good advice on your NHS website.

New ostomate, we’ve all gone through feeling low and depressed over your ostomy.
This is a pretty open group. Right now, in summer, it’s a low response time—lots of family things going on. If you need something, call out. Someone dealing with your situation will post something sooner or later.
It’s just that time of year.
Take care, and good luck.

Agree, look at your diet, but when it comes to intimacy, I always try to have an empty stomach so that I am not worried about any output or noise. Just a suggestion.

Ben had a great idea. Keep a food diary. That will help you know what to eliminate.

I'm glad we got back to ashallow's original topic and the suggestions she needs. Mindy needs her own post. I'm sure she'll get her own special kind of responses.

It'll calm down. Mine sounded like fireworks for the longest time. Now that's rare, and it mostly sounds like whimpering noises! Although I do believe ol' Eddie is trying to learn to whistle! Lol

I have a urostomy, so I have no experience with that, but I do have thoughts. It should not bother your boyfriend. Medical issues are a part of life, and we all have insecurities. It's just air. You didn't ask for this life. If he is bothered by it, tell him not to use his a**hole.

Whenever mine starts up, I just think of the "normal" people who don't even try to control themselves when they pass gas - we're far above them, lol! I mean, for the love of God! Sometimes, my stoma lets out this little exhausted sigh - so cute!

I'm sorry you feel as you do. It's hard to adjust at first, but you need to learn to embrace the new you. After all, it probably saved your life. Don't be scared to go out. Only you will know your secret. I lived in jeans before my stoma op and can still do so post-op. I can do most things that I could do before my op. I have recently traveled abroad but haven't built up the courage to go swimming yet. That's next on my agenda. As for eating, I can eat anything I want. Once you take that step towards acceptance, the world is your oyster. Go shine.

I had real problems in the early days with this - I was working with visually impaired students very tuned into sounds, so I took early redundancy from that job!

A few years on, and it is rarely a problem so long as I avoid milky coffee or ice cream when I'm out in public, especially at the theater, cinema, or such.

I found that mine was pretty noisy at first, but after a while, it quieted down. I usually know when it's going to start parking, so I press down on the stoma quite firmly. That seems to largely work. I did hear (😄) that there was some sort of muffling device that you could get….🤔 All good wishes with it. Angela

Hi Shallow543,

Here's what I use to help muffle noise and also allow me to wear blue jeans. It's a combination of a muffler and an ostomy band over it.

I fold the bag sideways and place two of the mufflers over it, and then pull the ~7-inch wide band over it. This does a pretty decent job of reducing the sound level, though not eliminating it entirely. The only drawback is it's a little harder to press it to determine when it's time to empty. Just keep track of how much you're eating and so forth. I always wear this when I'm around friends and family, as I'm overly concerned about the noise as well.

I have provided links below:

I wish you all the best!

Hi Ashallow

There is a website called COLONSILENCE. They sell something that works well. I think it's out of Germany. It is made of plastic and some kind of foam, and it attaches to an ostomy belt and goes right over the appliance.

I take gas pills from Amazon (cheaper than Gas-X), and I take it when I eat something that does cause it, things Terry just mentioned! Good luck and keep us posted! Lots of good info on here!

I just blame it on my husband, who blames it on one of the cats! Sometimes, we start a conversation with it... it does answer back! I won't be ashamed of it - once at a party, I got a terrible case of the giggles over it... my friends understand.
