Hi Moonshine! In Texas we went through one of the worst freeze crisis in history. I prepared for this as I was anticipating power outages and water problems. We have had hurricanes here so I learned about having supplies in advance. I buy supplies on eBay or Amazon. Sometimes pharmacies on those sites are selling the ostomy supplies. Another thing you can do is contact an ostomy nurse or hospital to see if you can get emergency supplies. Also, your local pharmacy might be able to help. I always say if there is a will there is way! Hope this helps. I'm sure there are others who could lend their experiences.

This site is a godsend. As a newbie (colostomy on Nov 8, '21), I look at it every day for a number of reasons. Reading what people are going through makes me grateful that my elective surgery because of a severe case of IBS-C is nothing compared to what they have been through and are still living with.

I don't have to go to the hospital for anything related to my ostomy. I feel sorry for those who do and am in awe of those who can use humor to describe their ordeal. I identify with those who express their fears. I especially identify with those who are depressed because I am clinically depressed and have general anxiety disorder. How ironic that having a colostomy eliminated some of the depression and anxiety that the IBS created. I've been widowed twice and I'm on match.com.
I immediately included my operation in my profile and am pleased to say it doesn't seem to make a difference.

And there is much humor on this site and it's one of the reasons I enjoy it so much.

I could name numerous things I've learned from reading people's comments/questions/answers.

After months following on a daily basis, my only negative comment is I don't like listing the most popular members.
It's not that I don't like these people; I do. It's that I think it elicits some "Facebook"-like banter or comments that are gratuitous.

I don't do any social media and think that its merits are overshadowed by too much negativity.

Meetanostomate is in no way negative. I just think the gallery of "popularity" detracts from what is an excellent website that deals with a serious issue that causes a myriad of emotions.

Hi C,

I order my ostomy stuff as a 90 day supply, per my insurance.  I have at times forgotten to re-order and ended up grabbing a box of barriers or rings off someone on Ebay to tide me over, but now whenever I place an order I always order a few more of each (bags, barriers, rings).  The extras go in a little backup box of supplies to get me thru either periods of higher usage than normal or shipping delays.  My Docs are super cool about letting me order any quantity of supplies I want, so a little planning prevents running out when the weather goes south, or there are other delays such as my stupidity, or needing a new script because I've run out of refills. Folks on here have been really good about helping out anyone in an immediate need for specific supplies.

regards,

bob

I also order for 90 days at a time. I use far less that I order so alway building a stockpile of supplies. I am trying to use them up now and get down to having just a little extra.
Edgepark does not ever let you forget to order! Lol

My insurance wil only pay for 20 sets a month and they won't let you order early. I don't always use 20 a month so I do have some build up. I used to just order what I needed. Then when this covid stuff started and with all the closings and the people not being able to work I decided to order the whole 20 sets each time it was time to reorder. Best wishes and stay safe
