ANOTHER WAR AND MORE 11 (stomas 2)

Before the war, it should be said
these present thoughts weren’t in my head,
my stoma was no problem and
medics might be close at hand.

But, since the war, all things have changed
and now our lives are rearranged
so much so, that one might think
nothing of a stoma stink.

Now medics are preoccupied
with the wounded and those who died,
so stomas slip right down the list
of many minor things now missed.

Before the war my stoma was
much more manageable because
supplies were there and could be bought
but now supplies amount to nought

Bombs are dropping all around
and mutilated bodies found,
which must now take priority
in this destroyed society.

Before the war, we knew the score
and what the bags and wipes were for,
but now these luxuries are gone
how do you think we carry on?

Everyone’s now in the shit
but we’re the ones who cope with it
coming from our stomas so
I just thought you ought to know.

But now there is another blight
where there’s no food, which isn’t right
yet without input, nowt comes out
and that’s what starvation is about.

What  I have learned about this war
and other wars that went before,
is they are evil, as are they
who perpetrate these wars today.

The one thing I never thought about was living with an ostomy in a war ravaged area with no ostomy supplies. Almost too sad to contemplate. There is no victor in wars that kill and maim so many innocents only shallow pacified egos.

I want to thank everyone for their suggestions, messages, and tips! So many have helped! We are learning as we go, learning the ins and outs of this bag. I have ordered special tape that does not irritate my skin and am now using Domeboro powder before putting on a new bag. My boyfriend says that my skin is so much less red!

Saw an ostomy nurse today; she said my boyfriend is doing everything right. One of my issues is that I am really thin, and my skin is really crinkly due to the surgery. We shall see how this bag goes.

This site is a real blessing. Everyone here is so awesome!

I'm sure there are lots of places on this planet where living with an ostomy would be very difficult, and they aren't war ravaged.  There are so many third-world countries, where just accessing food, shelter and basic medical care are extremely challenging.  How would someone with an ostomy cope?  We are very lucky indeed, and it's basically an accident of birth.

It would be just awful to have to deal with war and an ostomy or any medical condition during a time of war. I think it's unfathomable for me living in Central Illinois to think of being in a war torn place. So many things that take priority over what we would call basic needs. Like fleeing the area with only what you can carry.
