I have had my osteomyelitis for only a month. My question to any wonderful person is... Can I take Ibuprofen ?  Some websites say it's OK and another say no. Can anyone confirm the correct answer?    I would also like to know what the success rate is for reversal.

Hi toonew,

Wow, you got me confused too.  Osteomyelitis is a bone infection, nothing to do with an ostomy.  Did your phone guess at what you were typing and change "ostomy" to "osteomyelitis"?  I hope so.

Assuming that you meant "ostomy", then my next question is why the Ibuprofen and how much do you plan to take and for how long?  The issue of Ibuprofen causing bleeding is only from long term use, so unless you plan to pop them into your mouth like M&Ms all day........there shouldn't be much of a problem.  If you're concerned about bleeding from your ostomy incisions and surgical reconnection.......you had better be healed by now or you have other issues.  Check with your Doc regarding why you want to take the Ibuprofen, how much you should take and for how long.  Short term Ibuprofen use should not be a problem, but I have no idea what other issues/conditions you may have.....and that's an important piece of all this.

Reversal success depends on a large number of factors.  It's a conversation you need to have with your Gastro and Colorectal surgeon.  For people in the right condition without any other issues I'd say reversal is higly successful.  For those with other problems and a doctor/surgeon that's not too smart........it could be end up very unsuccessful.  You're not giving me enough info on why you're an ostomate, if what caused it is under control, and what other issues you have and what the condition of 'what you want to reconnect to' actually is.  Really too many components for anyone here to give you a straight answer.  Only our Doc knows the details.  You definitely want to get to know your Docs better.  Sorry I can't be of more help..........but your question is like asking if the survival rate for cancer is high?  Depends on just too many things you didn't include.

bob

Hi Hatlady and all,

I've had my ostomy for over 50 years, since I was a kid, and didn't think I really needed to be part of the ostomy site. But once active, I came to realize, that although I may not need help at the time, I was able to reach out and  help others in need. Back in the day, before stoma therapists, I use to visit new patients in the hospital or homes ... While professionals are great, it is also good to be able to speak with people with personal experience. I was a free member for awhile, but after writing often, I was given free months. I then started paying, and decided to just take lifetime membership. After all, I was going to have my ostomy for the rest of my life. I'm one of those people who can disappear for a few months at a time, but I'm always glad that the site is here, I can return and reconnect with old friends, and make new ones. This is an excellent site ... Best regards to all ... and Best wishes for a Healthy and Happy New Year.

Hi

Just thought I would pitch in that ibuprofen is no good if you have asthma or gasric reflux. As for your other question I can't help you on that one but if you look at the discussion forum there's a lot of stuff people have put about reversal. Let us know how you get on. XX

Thanks Bob,

I have rheumatoid arthritis and the weekly injections I administer have been on hold for 5 weeks now and I start them again this Saturday.  The Ibuprofen is for that pain...it will be about 6 weeks before the injection meds start really helping me again. So not long term,  but probably 4 tabs a day.  And thanks for the info on reversal.  I trust my doctor...and even though it's only been a month,  he wants to get me in asap for reversal as the ostomy happened after a first surgery for a different but fairly easy rectal surgery that ended up with a perforation in the bowel.  So here I am...life feeling completely upside down for me and I'm struggling with wrapping my head around the situation.  Again, thank you for your response.
