That's a standard drain put in post surgery.  To prevent blood and fluids from building up under the skin as much as possible.  Will be easily removed prior to discharge.

It wasn't removed prior but a week after and not for absess but for the surgery. If left to long it could cause an infection.  To early a build up of fluids.
