I work in a shop in the food section, selling things like chocolate bars, drinks, and a fridge section with sausage rolls and milk. Does anyone on here work with food in a similar way? Any comments will help.

I used to work with food. It's no problem. Just wash your hands the same way everyone should do, bag or no bag. We all go to the toilet one way or another.

I don't work with food, but I would imagine it to be much the same as not having a bag. We all have to piss and shit, so hey, go do what you have to do, wash your hands, then back to work. It's not as if you're going to say, "Would you like a stoma bag for your shopping?"

I used to work with food as a restaurant manager, and it didn't make any difference. In fact, I think people with a stoma pay more attention to good hygiene.

Thank you, everyone. Your comments are very helpful. My thoughts are that it should be looked upon the same as if you were to have a bowel movement. I wash my hands at every visit, and during work, I don't have to empty the bag much, if at all, throughout the day. So it shouldn't mean that I will have to stay on tills and never go back to my normal duties.

I was a chef. I found it hard to get a job as people were not informed about stoma. Therefore, I stopped informing people on job applications. I did get a great job in the end. I eventually told my head chef; he was understanding, told me I was a great worker, and that I was a person he could rely on (I always did overtime when asked). I have now retired but have happy memories of my working life.
