Hello group. Has anybody developed a hiatal hernia from their ostomy surgery? I have, and it's bad! My doctors seem irresponsible and only pass the buck. I am thinking about getting a colostomy to help improve my life since my ileostomy has been a living hell. 100 blockages in the last 7 years. Now I have a level 4 hiatal hernia which explains my constant burping after eating.

To complicate matters, I have been diagnosed with jackhammer esophagus! I wish I wasn't on Medical because all the specialists seem to only work in a small box and nothing is comprehensive. Like playing football with no quarterback! What to do? Who knows? They do try, but Big Pharma has destroyed quality healthcare as far as I'm concerned.

Hey there. Hate to tell you, but all doctors, no matter what insurance you have, work in a box. If you don't fit in the box, they brush you off and want nothing to do with you, or they come up with some bull crap diagnosis. It happens everywhere and with every type of doctor. You have to advocate for yourself, and when they say no, you have to stand up for yourself and stick to your guns. You know your body better than any doctor; you know how you feel and when something is wrong. And if that doctor doesn't listen, find a new one, and if that one doesn't want to listen, then again find a new one until someone will listen and will try to help you.

As far as the hiatal hernia, I had one long before I had my ileo. There isn't much that can be done; you will be given antacids. Why have you had so many blockages with your ileo?

Thank you for your quick reply. I'll discuss irrigation with my doctor. I'm sure it would be down the road. My output is still very liquid. It's all so unpredictable at 6 weeks post-op. I have such a fear of constipation as I struggled with this forever. I used a fiber source to thicken the stool but it hasn't helped very much. I guess I will continue to be positive but it is a bit of a pain. This website is great and everyone is so informative. Cheryl

Hi. I've had a urostomy for 10 years. (Also an ileostomy and nephrostomy for 3 years, but that's another story.) I had my hiatal hernia repaired 5 years ago. It predated the urostomy. I had no problems. I had the weird thing done where you can't throw up. I don't know why they do that. I still gag, and sometimes throw up just a little bit. Even when I've had a bowel obstruction (and I used to throw up a lot with them), I still don't throw up.

I don't know if that's helpful to you. The surgery was a slow recovery, moving from liquids to soft foods to normal foods, but the pain wasn't bad. Good luck.
