Hi all

I believe I have asked this before, but I'm asking again. What type of hernia belt have you found is most comfortable, holds in your hernia, and doesn't make you want to rip it off after a few hours? I have a 6” hernia belt (brace), and I am looking for recommendations for something smaller in width and hoping my ostomates have some good advice. Thank you!!!

NU-Hope makes belts in various sizes. The size of your hernia may determine what size belt you need more than what you want in order to work properly at holding in your hernia.

I have looked at every belt they offer. Someone on here said they had the 2-inch and 3-inch and wore the 2-inch most often, I believe. I will probably look at those again.

Thanks for your comment.

Yes, so much bulk. Hoping I can find something thinner but that will still hold this sucker in. I remain unconvinced that hernia belts work anyway. Your thoughts?

Thank you for your comment.

Very helpful

I can testify that my belt seems to reduce the pain I was having from my hernia. It's too soon to say whether or not it keeps the hernia from getting worse. My ostomy nurse was sure it would help.

My belt is from ostomybagholder.com. It is the only belt I've ever had, so I can't compare it to the other options. However, I have been happy with it. It is wider than I think you want, 4-5 inches. They do custom work, though, so if all else fails, try contacting them and see if they can make a narrower belt.

I cannot wear mine for more than about 2 hours. It seems as though it makes my hernia protrude even further in the area immediately surrounding my stoma. I was fitted by two ostomy nurses, so I think it's a proper fit. I do wear tights quite often, which hold everything in place - if I wear jeans, I wear elasticized underoos. Works for me. My hernia does not hurt - only when I wear the belt for extended periods. Also, I hate all the bulges the belt creates, so I rarely wear it. I am not willing to pay $150 or more to try another - at least as long as the hernia causes no discomfort. jb

I wouldn't try another belt in your situation either. The discomfort of the hernia makes the belt feel good to me. This is a prime example of how everyone is different!

I use Nu-Hope belts. I have 2, 3, and 4-inch wide models. I wear them all the time, except in the shower. I wear a 2-inch for a couple of days, switch to a 4-inch for 2 more days, then 3-inch... I just rotate wearing them all week. It doesn't bother my skin. And my stoma looks good at wafer change time. I use a Coloplast Brava moldable ring under the wafer and cut the wafer hole a little bigger than normal. This prevents the wafer hole from damaging peristomal skin at the base of the stoma when under the tension of the support belt.

So far, my hernia remains the same; it has not gotten worse.

Nu-Hope product guide page 24 Nu-Comfort belt. This one works very well for me.

They are very comfortable. I wear mine all the time. The only time I take them off is for showering.

I think they are useless in relation to my large parastomal number, exacerbating my back and hip issues as well. Some swear by NuHope, but it's a mixed bag (npi) over numerous reviews. I wonder if a large scarf wouldn't be a better deal in my case. Good luck, and I would love to hear your solution if you find one.
