Frustrations with Byram Healthcare Communication and Delays

Well, I had great hopes for working with Byram Healthcare. My first order at the beginning of December went well. However, during the month, I had to adjust my supplies to a different size or different form, so I submitted a reorder of some supplies and some new ones on December 26th. Two days later, they said my order was on hold. So, I called Byram, and it took me three tries and an hour on hold on the phone to find out that they have to get a new prescription approved from my doctor because the Medicare codes are different for the different products. Two days later, I called my doctor's office, and they never got the fax from Byram because they apparently had the wrong fax number. I called Byram again today (another hour on hold to speak to anyone!) and gave them the new fax number, so they said they would request it right away. Then it would take 2 more days for "verification" and 2 to 4 more days for shipping (assuming they get the fax back from the doc), so I will likely run out of my critical supplies before I get my order. I asked them to expedite it. I called my doctor's office back again to tell them that Byram was sending the request to the new fax number. So...I just now got an email update from Byram saying my order has not been processed because they are waiting for more information from my provider. GRRRR!!!! At this point, I logged into my Amazon account and spent $150 of my own money to get the supplies I need so I won't run out next week.

Anyone else have these experiences with Byram? Impossible to get anyone on the phone (I tried chat, too), and what's with all the verification cycles? I wonder if I'm better off just paying out of pocket for the next month or so until my reversal surgery. Any advice?

It's common.

Yes. Everywhere... every company... if you have to update your order. It's a lengthy process. Their protocol sucks. Insurance company sucks.

What happened that made you decide to upgrade after receiving the first order?

This group has been my go-to during my loneliest hours whenever I've had a "bag blowout" at 3am and there was no one else in the world to talk to.

Because it's a global community, there's always someone here to lend an ear, provide advice, and just hold my hand if that's all I need.

Sure, there's also a lot of camaraderie, fun topics, and laughs, but the main reason I come here is for the total acceptance I get from the members. No one else on the planet could possibly "get" what I'm going through, not even my loving husband or supportive family.

The "Meet an Ostomate" forum is definitely a one-of-a-kind family, which I am very proud to belong to.

Unfortunately, many people take vacations around the holidays. In many cases, the newer, less experienced employees are the ones working during the holidays. Things may be better after the holidays.

I had to go back to a different size (thicker) Cera Ring because the slim one was leaking. I found that out a couple of weeks after I received my first order from Byram and couldn't place a reorder until the end of the month. I also ordered the bottle of lubricant instead of the packets. Those are the reasons for the switch, and so it's like starting all over again. In the meantime, I just ordered what I needed from Amazon. Not sure if they'll ever get it straightened out at Byram. Luckily, I only have about 7 more weeks to go, so if I have to pay for my own supplies to get through it, so be it. Very frustrating experience. Feel like I'm being held hostage.

Thank you. That explanation was helpful.

I use the thin Cera rings too.

In an experiment, I took two of them and squashed them together, making it thicker.

Have you thought of that?

Also, if you need Cera rings and are on a budget, Kas here could help, and I have some here I could mail you. What you don't use, you can return for another member to me. I was donated supplies by a member who didn't need them anymore.

Just confirm the part number.

I will send you an email. And we can get this sorted for you.

Thoughts?

I quit using Byram because of issues like this.  I switched to Better Health Supplies, Inc (415-475-8444) and they've been OK.

I have the same issues with Adapt Health. Very frustrating.

Hi Warrior:

I do take two of the Slim rings and double them up, but they do slide around a bit more. I ordered a box of thicker ones from Amazon, and they will be here on Monday, so I think I'm good; I've got 2 more of the thick ones from the sample stash that Hollister sent me that will last into next week. Very gracious of you to offer to help, though! You all are great.

Update: I checked with Byram again today, and they are finally going to ship my order (took 10 days to get to this point), so I should be getting what I need next week, depending on where they ship from. If it's California, I should be all set. (I'll have to make sure I actually get what I ordered, like Worzie suggested.) Fingers crossed!

And more good news: I scheduled an appointment with my GI doc in a couple of weeks to discuss prep for my reversal surgery and get my questions answered about the "before and after." That's the next hurdle.

Live in Vegas but have been using Mar J. Medical in Boca Raton, FL. Huge ostomy business. Been using them for over 20 years. Tired of the regular places that people use. Ask for Peter. Great guy and really on top of paperwork with doctors. Old school service! Fast shipping.

I use Byram Healthcare, Medicaid, and a supplemental.

The only issue I have had with them is the persistent once-a-month or so text messages telling me to reorder.

Some products I don't like (from my original stoma nurse prescriptions), so I have tried other options, but I have to log in to the website to change anything.

Text messages will only reorder what your last order was.

But heck, no trouble. Always fast delivery and, for me, no cost.

We are having the same issues with Byram, and I would love to kick them to the curb. Does anyone out there have better supply companies than Byram? I'm so sick of the communication. I have now been waiting two weeks for supplies, and they say they fax things; they don't, and it's getting on my nerves really bad. This is a constant problem with them.

My experience with Byram was almost identical to my issues happening while I was 250 miles from home going through 6 weeks of radiation treatments. I too had to order supplies on Amazon to get me through. I use Convetec products because I have a cousin who has lived with an ileostomy for 45 years and served as an ostomy nurse for decades. She has tried every product and brand and recommended Convetec, which I have been very happy with. I switched to a little company in Oklahoma called 180 Medical, and I have had excellent personal customer service. I can talk to a real person, and when I have had to change my order, the transition was prompt and without delay. Unlike Byram and their "faxed it, but the doctor didn't get it," over and over.

Update on the Byram situation: the order finally got here on January 4th, but then they sent me 60 of the wrong size pouches! I needed the 2 1/4" diameter; they sent 1 1/4" diameter...umm, no, that won't work at all - everything would end up on my shoes. The shipment arrived on a Saturday; I called Byram again and waited half an hour on hold. They apologized, confirmed that I had indeed ordered the correct product number, and she said she'd put a rush order for 2 boxes of the right size, and they'd be here on Monday. Nope! I went to the website, and they only ordered ONE box, and it was only APPROVED to be shipped. I called them again on Monday, another half hour on hold, and she said they'd put a rush on the second box and it would arrive on Tuesday. Tuesday morning I went to the website, and yup, you guessed it, the first rush order won't arrive until Thursday, and it was coming from Washington. Later in the day on Tuesday, I checked, and the second rush order won't arrive until Wednesday and it was coming from Texas. That's sure some rush ordering, all right!!! Sheesh. Bottom line: I re-ordered my supplies on December 26th, and I didn't receive my complete order until January 9th. If I hadn't ordered my emergency supplies from Amazon, I would have been in real trouble. Unbelievable!!

Byram told me I didn't have to return the two boxes of 18332 pouches and that I could donate them, so I may call my ex-ostomy nurse and see where I can take them. Anyone need any closed ostomy pouches for a really tiny stoma?

I have an appointment with my surgeon on January 27th to discuss my colostomy take-down surgery tentatively scheduled for late February. I think I have enough supplies to get me through about 4 more weeks, and I'm thinking of just ordering what I need from Amazon for the balance of the time. I don't need the added stress of dealing with these people!!!
