Severe Gas and Pain After Eating Pizza: Anyone Else?

Hey everyone, I'm having a serious amount of gas and pain after eating pizza. I had some last night and was doubled over in pain, took Gas-X, but it didn't help for a couple of hours. I was up till about 5 a.m. I also had baklava, and I thought that's what it was from.

Today, my husband heated up the leftover pizza for lunch. I took 3 bites and my stomach started going insane. Tons of gas and pain again.

Has this happened to anyone else after eating? I'm not sure if it's just gas because I've had pizza since surgery and I've been fine. This is very new and intense.

Should I be worried about my pancreas, since I don't have a colon, rectum, anus, or gallbladder? I'm not alarmed enough yet to seek medical attention; I'm used to being in pain.

Was the pizza from a different place or the regular place you get it from?

People build sensitivity to food in a blink. No more pizza for you.

Until you get straight, that just sucks. Never had issues at all. I'm ileo 8 years. Pizza is usually my go-to food.

Don't wait in pain too long, kiddo. It's a sign. Something's wrong or passing through.

If I was a relative newbie with an ostomy, I have no doubt that this site would be very helpful to me.  The members are quick to respond to questions and issues and they are filled with experience.  When I joined, I already had a lifetime with an ostomy, so I just regard it as a place to meet and communicate with other folks similarly situated.  Either way, it is a good site.

Maybe it's a bug? Give it a rest and eat bland foods for a bit, then start reintroducing regular foods slowly and in small amounts. If it comes back, then you've identified something you can't eat.

Hopefully, this is transient. I'd be sad if I couldn't eat pizza.

The pizza was from the same place we always get pizza. My upper abdomen still hurts, cramping, and aching.

I may just call the doctor in the morning.

I am sad that I had to put the pizza down. It's one of my favorite foods.

Gas pains are the worst! A Coke Zero, with the fizz and causing me to burp, helps. At least for me.

I will also massage the area where I feel the pain, and that will often help move it along.

Sorry you are feeling bad; it stinks for sure.

When I started having pain after eating a few years ago, I got nowhere in the medical community. I had my gallbladder out and still had the pain. I've come to the conclusion that one of the causes is too much heavy dough - pasta, pizza dough - things that create thicker output. I go easy on those things now. This may be the case for you, or you may have a blockage, in which case the Coke is a good suggestion. I'd also move a lot, rotate at your center, and hold those positions. Breathe really deeply as you push your belly out as far as you can, then suck it all the way in as you exhale. Slow, deep breaths. Hope it goes away soon!

You could have a partial blockage. Doesn't baklava have nuts in it? If so, you could still be suffering from that blockage today. It might not be the pizza at all. If you have had pizza before and been fine, my other question is: was there something different, toppings-wise, on this pizza? Consider the toppings as something that could cause a partial blockage. If, say, there were peppers or mushrooms on the pizza, or olives even, these are hard-to-digest items.

I did massage my stomach; I've been doing that long before the ileostomy. I also took extra strength Gas X, walked around, changed positions, etc.

It was only cheese. ☹️

Anne Shirley,

Is your output normal the way it always is after eating pizza? And are you passing gas? Ginger ale or 7-Up always works for me to relieve gas and settles the tummy. But also, as has been said above, when you get pains or if your stoma is showing signs of any type of blockage, stop eating and switch to liquids. I wouldn't take any more Gas-X.

3 bites in wouldn't have had a chance to reach other organs besides your stomach.

A lot of adults (30 & up) start experiencing lactose intolerance. Can you eat anything else with dairy?

My other thought is norovirus has been going through my region, and it is not kind to the GI system. My GI recommended this to me a couple of years ago, and I keep it at home always. IB guard can also be helpful, but when I took that, it always came out in my ileostomy bag.

G-Day Anne,

I agree with eefyjig and Iinfinitycastle. You could have a blockage from whatever you had eaten before the pizza. If you only had a small bite and got the pain, it didn't have time to get to your lower organs. We all learn from our mistakes.

There was a ton of gas. I sounded like a symphony, lol. There was output, gas. It felt like my upper middle abdomen was being squeezed and stabbed.

Same pizza as usual, and it's never done that.

Hi Anne, was the cheese really thick and chewy? I have to avoid pizzas like that as the mozzarella doesn't break down.

I have been eating/drinking dairy fine so far. My husband thinks it's the grease from the pizza.
