Staple Appearing from Stoma: Anyone Experienced This?

A staple magically appeared at the bottom of my stoma 2 days ago. I went to the doctor today, and they said it should work itself out. As long as I don't have any issues and am still pooping properly, and it isn't causing me any discomfort, I should leave it alone. Have any of you ever experienced something like this? I still feel a little nervous about it.

Hey there, no, and I have had my fair share of stomas done. It should be stitches, not staples. Where did the staple come from? And that looks like it's in your stoma, not the skin. That is something I would definitely go back and have them remove; that's not right.

MeetAnOstoMate website turned out to be a lifesaver for me. I say this because, for me, this ostomy journey was a devastating event both physically and mentally.
Here, I found folks who understood my feelings even better than my family or friends could. Only a fellow ostomate can understand how you really feel.

Information sharing is key, as well as support and understanding, to ultimately bring more harmony into our ostomy life journey. I found here, virtually no ostomy questions that are not touched upon. Questions which some might feel, may be too trivial to contact a doctor about or even too shy or embarrassed to ask their own doctor about. They are all addressed here.

For me, anonymity was very helpful in seeking answers to each phase of this life changing medical and mental event. Sharing initial trauma feelings, ongoing support and finally acceptance was what I found with my membership here. I am not sure what my mental and physical attitude would be today without having found this site.

Additional benefits included: finding products and ideas to help with daily maintenance, innovative ideas and as a bonus - some great humor.
After all “laughter IS the best medicine”.

I have been a member for 3 years, an ostomate for 4 years - yes, I certainly wish I would have found it immediately after surgery but so very thankful I finally found it when I did as I truly believe it turned my troubled depression and situation into a more positive attitude and acceptance.

Sincerely,
An Ileostomate nicknamed Justbreathe 🫶🏼

Wow, you're the first one I have seen this on.

Hi

Doctors don't seem to be too concerned about much of anything these days. Tough to judge, though. I've never seen that before, but it would definitely bother me.

I don't know, but it looks pretty scary to me. Is the doctor who looked at it the same one who did your surgery?

Just had three staples removed, and they don't look anything like that. There might be different types, but that doesn't look like a staple.

Just a thought, Shona -

Have you tried putting the pic into Google Images, or better still, ask Perplexity or Chat GPT what the metal part is in the picture?

Either way, I would have it checked out by someone independently.

Do not be fobbed off - I would say that it needs attention.

It should be investigated right away. Maybe OK. But that determination should be made after inspection by the surgeon... or imaging... or both.

Agree with everyone above. This isn't right. Metal staple? Why? What was it for? It looks tied into the stoma.

Go see your surgeon. If he blows you off, see another surgeon who does this type of work.

Your skin looks great around the stoma. But this thing? Nope. Never saw it before.

Hi all, when I had resection surgery a few years ago, I had a couple of black stitches sticking out like that, and the surgeon said to leave them and they will fall out or fall apart on their own.

I have one also, although it never protruded that much. It appeared about four or five years ago after one of the surgeries. I was getting a colonoscopy and showed my surgeon; it was one of his fellows who did it. He was surprised but said, "I can remove it now if you want, but it will bleed a bit." We decided to leave it. He too said it would be ejected, but it hasn't happened yet. However, I have grabbed it with some tweezers, pulled it a little, and snipped it off level with the surface with wire cutters a couple of times. Danger is my middle name 🤣, but for the last two years or so, it's not going anywhere, and what's left is pretty much level with the skin, although half of it is still in there. Me, I would open that loop a little and remove it like a fish hook, but that's me. If it doesn't trouble you, that's fine; let it be.

I now have a second staple moving its way out of me. They do not bother me at all; it just scares me to think about where they came from. The doctor said they'll be fine and to let them work their way out. As you can see, the first one is almost out. Very weird!

Wow, they're really on the move; mine just aren't interested in going anywhere. 🤣

Hi all, that's a healthy-looking stoma and surrounding skin.

I too am experiencing it, but no pain. I have an Indiana pouch. It's just weird, but I'm going to call my surgeon at Vanderbilt tomorrow.
